Glenn, John Herschel, Jr.

Первый американский астронавт [astronaut], совершивший 20 февраля 1962 орбитальный полет вокруг Земли на космическом корабле "Меркурий" [Mercury] (продолжительность полета составила 4 часа 55 минут 23 секунды). В 1942-65 служил в Корпусе морской пехоты [Marine Corps, U.S.]; летчик-испытатель. В 1959 начал работать в рамках космической программы США. В 1964 впервые попробовал силы в большой политике, но проиграл на выборах в Сенат США [Senate, U.S.]. В 1974-75, 1980-99 сенатор-демократ от штата Огайо, председатель комитета по связям с правительством. 29 октября - 7 ноября 1998 в возрасте 77 лет совершил полет на космическом челноке "Дискавери" [Discovery; Space Shuttle] продолжительностью 213 часов 44 минуты.
